Safety Program

We believe the overall performance of a company is ultimately linked to a robust safety program that is designed to protect the health and welfare of job site workers, the client and its staff, the general public, and in the case of educational facilities, the protection of children.

Safety Director Greg Havel

Scherrer Construction employs the dedicated services of an OSHA certified Safety Director. Greg Havel provides high level employee training and conducts continuous jobsite safety audits.

Greg has over 30 years experience in facilities management, including 25 years experience as an owner’s representative on construction and renovation projects.  He has 15 years experience in managing construction and fire service safety programs. Since July 2007,  Greg has also been preparing the “Construction Concerns” column for FireEngineering.com.

All safety audits are pro-active in order to immediately engage corrective actions on any potentially hazardous situation.  Scherrer’s focus on safety never stops.  In fact, strategies for an effective safety program start before the project begins.
A conventional plan of action will include the following elements:
  • Hard Hats
  • Eye, Hearing and Respiratory Protection
  • Work Shoes
  • Fall Protection Systems
  • GFCI Protected Electrical Service
  • Hazardous Communication (Material Safety Data)
  • Site Security (guard rails, barricades, temporary lighting)
  • Limited Access Zones
  • Wind Bracing (of structural unsupported components)
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Rubbish Removal
  • Noise Reduction
  • Equipment and Tool Security
  • Pedestrian and Vehicle Circulation
  • Fire Exits (re-mapping)
  • Safety Meetings
  • Accident Reporting Process Review and Training
  • Prohibition of Smoking Products (on school grounds)
For educational facilities (or similar projects), Scherrer Construction has established a Student Safety Awareness Program.  This program is specifically designed to invest additional attention to site security measures aimed at protecting students and faculty.  This program starts at the earliest stages of site development activity and is presented to students in a school assembly where age specific discussions are held to increase their awareness and need for safety in and around construction areas.  Mini field trips are also scheduled through the Superintendent to help children understand the construction process, together with learning more about the inherent dangers of a construction site. Scherrer Construction also requires custom name tags identifying all employees as part of the construction project, even if they are not working within the school.
Since 1928, the tradition of keeping our projects safe continues…
