Often our customers seek an environmentally responsible, energy efficient building without the LEED certification. Scherrer Construction can assist any project in becoming environmentally friendly by working with each Owner and Architect to implement green construction techniques. Throughout the construction process, we will work to create a sustainable site. The following are a few ways Scherrer Construction can assist our customers with going green, without certifications.
Controlling the Site
Characteristics of an environmentally-friendly site include controlled, reduced storm water run-off. By controlling the storm water we allow valuable rain water to drain properly in the soil and save expensive and nutrient-rich top soil. We also implement Best Management Practices (BMP) by properly installing fences and marking equipment traffic paths throughout the site. Our LEED certified Project Mangers will work with Architects and Owners to design and develop bio-swales, pervious pavement and natural roofing options.
Selecting Materials
We also work with our sub-contractors and the design team to use sustainable materials and resources. Some of the cost savings and green practices we implement include reusing existing building components whenever possible. Often in renovation projects we are able to remove, store and reinstall good condition doors, cabinetry and ceiling tile. We also monitor our Construction Waste Management tactics to ensure we are separating materials to be recycled properly.
While evaluating plans and supply order lists Scherrer Construction can assist Owners and Architects in their selection of regional materials. Not only will the use of local materials and suppliers reduce carbon emissions because of decreased transportation needs, it can also lower the amount of long lead items. Projects that use high percentage of regional materials also assist in re-fueling the local economy.
